Miao Women Adorned in Silver

The government of China contains 56 recognized ethnic groups of which the Miao people are one. The Miao people lived primarily in the mountainous regions of southern China in the provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan. The term “Miao” originated around the time of the Ming dynasty, famous for ruling during the silver trade, and had a negative connotation as “barbarian” for any non-Han people (the majority ethnic group of China). One of the most interesting things about the Miao people is their reverence for silver and especially the usage of it by women.

In the Miao culture, much focus is placed around silver. The majority of men are trained to craft silver and while men also wear it, women are the primary wearers of it in large amounts. The Miao people wear silver jewelry for its aesthetic qualities, as it represents wealth, and as it is thought to ward off evil spirits. While the Miao craft silver hats, horns, combs, earrings, neckbands, necklaces, and bracelets, among other items, their prized silver production is the silver headpieces which can take months to complete as it is all hand made along with all other Miao silver items produced. Much of the silver culture in the Miao people revolves around a woman’s wedding.

It is tradition for Miao parents to start collecting silver crafted pieces when a daughter is born for her to wear on her wedding day. On a woman’s wedding day she may be adorned with up to ten kilograms of silver on her. It is thought that the more silver a woman has to offer a man, the greater her chances of marrying well. The son in a Miao culture receives a larger share of the family’s inheritance and his mother’s silver jewelry collection, which is used as bridal wealth or dowry for the bride. Outside of marriage ceremonies, the Miao people wear heavy and intricate silver headdresses and jewelry during significant occasions and festivals including funerals and springtime celebrations.

Analysis: The Miao people have a strong belief that silver is valuable and important to them as a society, so much so that they work decades to accumulate it so it can be heavily utilized in the most important moments of their lives. Yet another culture independent of others that are geographically far from it intrinsically views silver as extremely valuable. Silver is intrinsically valuable for the simple reason that the People say it is. No further explanation is needed from alleged Economists, Bureaucrats, Wall Street personalities, or any other mainstream and compromised faux voice of authority.

People know silver is valuable all over the world so they mine it, refine it, acquire it, store it, trade it, and use it to meet their financial and economic needs. This has happened since the earliest known points of civilization when the ability to extract large amounts of silver became possible. Despite the constant attempts to subvert this natural intrinsic attraction to silver (and gold) by the powers-that-be who consistently seek to downplay the importance of precious metals in humanity, many elite institutions and individuals are secretly acquiring it for themselves in large numbers. And actions mean a lot more than words.
