Lincoln’s 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar in Haugan, MT
Imagine you own a bar in beautiful rural Montana whose top bar and wall is covered with silver dollars, most of which were donated by patrons over the years. That’s the Lincoln’s 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar in Haugan, MT and its walls now have a lot more than 50,000 silver dollars and a name change (upgrade) is likely coming soon.
Founded in 1952, the family owned bar that is off of Exit 16 on I-90 about halfway between Spokane, WA and Missoula, MT offers a restaurant, two bars, a gift shop, a motel, and RV park, two casinos, gas, diesel and a convenience store. Haugan, MT is in the aptly named Mineral County and is surrounded by the Lolo National Forest and the St. Regis River flows right through the town. The nearby Haugan/Randolph Creek Loop Snowmobile Trail offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and other winter sports to locals and visitors alike. The Savenac Nursery, which as a national historic site was one of the first National Forest nurseries established in 1908, suffered a terrible fire a few years later, but this heavily influenced the National Forest’s mission to prevent forest fires and focus on conservation.
The bar itself at one point was The 10,000 Silver Dollar Bar, but as patrons continued to bring more silver dollar donations to the bar, their numbers continued to rise and the bar’s name along with it. There are two mannequins of rustic cowboy-types so the bar is never technically empty. Its top or main bar along with the walls from floor to ceiling have silver dollars with the names of the patrons who donated them. There is a counter that records how many silver dollars have been received to-date from patrons and are therefore part of the decorations of the joint. As of 2019, there were over 75,000 silver dollars at the bar so we imagine there are a lot more now and that soon this famous and unique place will be renamed Lincoln’s 100,000 Silver Dollar Bar.
There is no known collection this large and diverse of silver dollars in the world. While we can’t be certain that all the silver dollars at the bar contain 90% silver as some likely have numismatic value that exceeds the silver value, some have 40% silver, and some have no silver at all, the value of this silver collection is obviously very large and only headed up in the near future. A very conservative estimate that half of the 75,000 silver dollars are 90% silver would yield a value of $32 per coin and over $1 million dollars in USD value. Taking a likely more accurate value of silver if its price were not so heavily manipulated of $3,096 an ounce (U.S. Debt Clock), the value of this collection would exceed $100 million dollars. We imagine folks are armed around the bar.
Rooms at the motel next to the bar, the Silver Dollar Inn, range from $79 to $109 a night and discounts are available for folks over 65 and truckers traveling through the area. The menu for the restaurant has all sorts of Western and American favorites but its highlight is The Silver Dollar Burger, which can have the beef substituted for Bison if so desired. They have weekend meal specials on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you want to try your luck at gambling, their casinos are there to accommodate, or you can go explore a beautiful part of the country that likely doesn’t get a lot of annoying weekend urban campers.
