The London Silver Vaults
One of the largest silver markets on earth, if not the largest, is in The London Silver Vaults on Chancery Lane in London, United Kingdom. Many Londoners are not even aware of this unique collection of silver merchants in the vaults underground the main entrance. The Vaults were initially opened in 1876 as a safe deposit box storage concept that held documents, silver, gold, jewelry and other valuables for London’s elite but a few years later was converted to silver shops. The original above-ground building was destroyed in World War 2 in a bombing which incidentally did not damage the vaults or their content at all. This is because the nearly four feet thick walls of the vaults are steel lined and concrete.
The Chancery House, the above ground building that the vaults sit beneath, was built in 1953 and most of the same families have been selling silver since then with 29 specialty shops contained within the vaults. The shops are enclosed within small cells, each one protected by a robust iron door and the layout has remained the same for over 50 years now. The vault door at the entrance, which weighs 7 tons, was constructed by the well-known (in the 1800s) John Tann Safe Company and it has never been successfully burglarized to this day. No photographs are allowed of the vault entrance and photos are forbidden in general, with the only photos and videos out there being approved by the shop owners under special circumstances.
Some of the silver pieces in the vaults date back to the 1600s, but modern pieces of silver tableware, cutlery, decorative pieces and gifts, fine jewelry and rare collectors’ items are all available at the vaults as well. The vaults are lined with pictures of celebrities including Liberace and Princess Diana. As unbelievable as it may sound, there are silver gifts starting as low as £20, but do not expect the majority of the items at the vault to be anywhere near that inexpensive. One thing Bullion TP can likely assure folks of is that you will get more honesty from these folks at the London Silver Vaults than you can expect from the London Bullion Market Association (LMBA), but we assume that most of you already know that!
The vaults are open to the public and free of charge to explore. The London Silver Vaults is on the corner of Chancery Lane and Southampton Buildings, open Mon-Fri, 9am to 5.30pm, and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
